The Funeral

Today, it is a rainy day. Today is a sad day. This song has a melancholy sound, yet an uplifting sound. In the overview of the song, it can only mean one thing. We cannot control time. We cannot stop it, pause it, or rewind it. All we can do is live each moment that we have in that moment.

And one day we will not have those moments; we will not have time. Live your life now. Get up, get off the couch, wake up early, watch the sunrise outside in your pajamas with a cup of coffee, don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today, and above all forgive.

People make mistakes; we all do. Forgive those people that have hurt you. When you forgive them, then you are finally free from that. It holds you down, and it’s hard to get up and watch a sunrise with a cup of coffee when you’re fighting the weight of past mistakes.

Today: let’s live; tomorrow may never be.

Bad to the Bone

In recognition of my new toy, a 1988 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883, here is “Bad to the Bone.”

This is what the eighties held for anyone who felt they just achieved something great. I must say that this song electrifies my joy after fighting to get my bike.

Whoever is out there, don’t live the easy, simple life. Break challenges, take risks—break arms, take names. Always live b-b-b-b-b-bad. Bad to the bone.

I'm Shipping Up To Boston

Not many lyrics, not much of a meaning on the surface. Let’s dig into it and see it for what it is. The song only sings about a sailor who has lost his leg. He climbed up the sails and lost his leg.

So the sailor decides to go to Boston to find his leg. It sounds simple and easy, but when you put the relentless strength and fierceness behind the image it takes a new meaning. This guy will not give up!

He will do whatever it takes, fight to the end, in order to get what he wants. He is not afraid of getting hurt or dying. He is what lives in everyone that you have to summon out in times of great need. Never give up. Let your little legless sailor come out and fight any obstacle you think is too big or hard.

Ship up to Boston!

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

Bob Dylan is probably the greatest lyricist. Here is a song though that is rather to the point and simple, but it has a good message—as well as a not so good one. Dylan sings “everybody must get stoned.”

The on-the-top reference is speaking on how no matter what you do, there are going to be people to say you are wrong and sinful. Wherever you go people are going to “stone” you for meaningless things. This song sheds light on people like that, as well as a light for something else that I will allow you to get out of this yourself.

The song repeats many scenarios of when you will be stoned. It points out that in every situation from walking down the street to even death that everyone must get stoned. People can be increasingly self-conscious in their own life that they only attack others.

This song can be a pick-me-up for people that are going through a hard time with something. Everyone is in your business, picking, prodding, and poking for information. People seem to always have something to say. So let’s at least listen to someone who has something good to say.

“...I would not feel so all alone, everybody must get stoned.”

Stand By Me

This song pretty much speaks for itself. With love, we are willing to go through anything. As long as that person is with us, by us, or near us we can withstand anything. Because if that person was not with us it makes even those easy times seem difficult.

We all know the song, and what it means. Today, let’s appreciate an oldie but goodie. Go about your day thinking of that person who means the most to you; even if it is just someone who gives you strength—friends, parents, or anyone.

Think of them, and do something special to show them that you are not afraid, just as long as they are standing by you.

Animal

Animal is a song for the people who are unsatisfied, the people who feel like they are just going through the emotions. Here is a man singing about hiding behind a fake image when truly he is something else.

He is trying to shape shift into what the world sees as average and normal. Truly, he is something else altogether. He has dreams and ideas that he has lost grasp of along the way of trying to fit in.

Is who you are inside allowed to come out; do you allow people to see who you are; do you embrace yourself? We cannot give up on who we are, or we were meant to be. If everyone conforms to hiding their true self then we would all turn into consecutive creatures living out consecutive lives without emotions or surprise.

Are you free or are you tied up?

Say Hey (I Love You)

It is a pick-me-upper. A very catchy tune, with a simple beat. It can go beyond a simple love song. It can be applied to anyone. Love is stronger; love will always conquer.

This song has a way of making you forget all the troubles that possess your thoughts. The video seems to pull this off by showing people laughing and dancing who do not seem to have many things they can call their own.

Even a little smile can brighten someone’s day. So, if you are having a rough day, look out for that person that will send you a little smile to brighten your day; If you are having a respectable day, spread a smile to people as you pass; who knows, they could be having a rough day!

Love is addicting and contagious. Even for one day, it can spread exponentially. Yeah waking up early and going to school or work can be a nasty thing, but if you let yourself smile, it can change your entire perspective.

Say hey, I love you.

Do You Realize

Today is a song to counter the last. Yesterday, we played a sad song; today, we are playing a song to make you realize. Realize that nothing is centered on us—not the sun, time, or even happiness.

The song puts it so well. “And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast; it's hard to make the good things last…” Today, let’s look at the past—our happiness, failures, and depression—and say I realize; therefore, I am content.

We cannot hold onto a happiness that is moving. Moreover, we cannot hold onto failures and depression either. Good things do not last, but neither do the bad things. There will always be another, brighter day.

Just give it ten hours for the Earth to misconceive a sunrise once more.

Bring It on Home to Me

I guess we can call this a love story—without a happy ending, but an optimistic vibe. It’s just an old bearded man singing his songs on the streets for spare change when he was discovered. Imagine hearing this man’s songs “live” every day. Here is one of them.

He sings about the girl he loved leaving him. He wants her to know that if she ever changes her mind, he will forgive her. He just wants her to come home. It sounds very gloomy right? The song has a peculiar upbeat atmosphere to it.

I see it as this old man without any money playing his heart out on the street. What does he have left to be upset about? When a grown man sings about his lost love in an optimistic tune, a lot can be learned from him.

We worry over so many small things that we block out our happiness. Ted Hawkins understood how to live. And if you are out there missing that one person that hurt you, or you hurt, just forget about everything that happened—it won’t matter in ten years. Bring it on home.

The Lighthouse's Tale

A very sad song—this is a story from a lighthouse’s view. It tells of the lighthouse and its relationship with its keeper. The lighthouse represents God. It sees all, and it spreads it light for people to follow. The keeper grew very close to it as he was with the lighthouse day in and day out.

Then the keeper met a very beautiful woman, and they fell profoundly in love. One night as she went out to sea, her ship crashed under the punishing power of a storm. She died and was washed up to shore where the keeper found her. So in love with her, he climbed the lighthouse and leaped off hoping to see her again.

It’s a love song that teaches a lesson. I know it is a cliché, but life is truly short and unexpected. When you are in love with someone, you cannot let that turn mediocre. You cannot let things go unsaid and undone. At any minute, we have all learned, anything can happen.

Treat every moment like it will be the last you will have. Let your love grow past the mindless troubles of the average relationship. Do not let your worries focus on things that are meaningless—it is a waste of time. Treat people with care, treat yourself with respect, and treat the one you love unconditionally.

Today’s challenge: to love.
